Micromachining of Engineering Materials (Hardcover): J.A. McGeough Micromachining of Engineering Materials (Hardcover)
J.A. McGeough
R7,312 Discovery Miles 73 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Explaining principles underlying the main micromachining practices currently being used and developed in industrial countries around the world, Micromachining of Engineering Materials outlines advances in material removal that have led to micromachining, discusses procedures for precise measurement, includes molecular-level theories, describes vaporizing workpiece material with spark discharges and photon light energy, examines mask-based and maskless anodic dissolution processes, investigates nanomachining by firing ions at surfaces to remove groups of atoms, analyzes the conversion of kinetic to thermal energy through a controlled fine-focused beam of electrons, and more.

Since the major pioneering of joint replacement surgery more than fifty years ago, much research and progress has been made in the field of arthroplasty with new insights into better materials, types of cement and bone-cell compatible coatings, and a better understanding of the causes of implant failure. With an increasingly ageing population the requirement for arthroplastic surgery is manifest; over 800,000 hips worldwide are replaced each year, and replacement surgery is performed for almost every joint of the body.

"The Engineering of Human Joint Replacements" covers the design, engineering, production and manufacture of human joint replacements, as well as associated engineering concerns such as surface coatings, orthopedic bone cement, the causes and effects of wear and tear, and rapid prototyping for clinical evaluation. Materials evaluation and selection is discussed, as well as production processes and insertion methods. The author provides an overview of skeletal anatomy and the effects of pain and deterioration in order to put the engineering principles into a medical context. Examples of joint replacements for the most common regions of the body are included, and aspects of clinical studies of these cases are discussed.

Key Features:

- Provides an overview of the engineering materials and processes involved in the manufacture of human joint replacements- Sets the scene for engineers and clinicians embarking on research into joint replacements- Includes clinical and industrial examples and points the way to future developments- Provides information on medical device companies with an engineering guide to the requirements for joint replacement

"The Engineering of Human Joint Replacements" bridges the divide between engineering and orthopaedic surgery, offering an introductory text to young engineers entering the field, as well as a reference for medical staff who will benefit from an understanding of the materials and methods used in their design, engineering and manufacture.

"Computer aided Production Engineering" contains valuable information from both industry and academia to discuss progress in research and development in this major branch of engineering that affects all industrialized countries. Manufacturing globally has witnessed major transitions, the rapid advancement in electronics and communication technologies enables design and manufacture to proceed on an international dimension that until now could not be anticipated. The advent of these technologies has affected large, medium, and small sized enterprises throughout the world. Emphasis is moving towards procedures that employ innovative and new uses of computer aided production engineering techniques as an aid to the manufacture of prostheses, by well known methods of computer aided design and manufacture, and the use of agile manufacture and robotics. "Computer aided Production Engineering" will be of great interest for all those involved in product design, manufacturing processes, automated machinery, and the most up to date advances in this far reaching area of engineering. Topics covered include: Computer aided Design and Manufacture; Computer aided Process Planning; Quality in Manufacturing and Design; Concurrent Engineering and Design for Manufacture; Production and Control; AI Applications in Manufacturing; Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management; Manufacturing Processes; Rapid Prototyping; Robotics in Medicine; and Computer aided Orthopaedic Surgery.

Advanced Methods of Machining (Hardcover, 1988 ed.): J.A. McGeough Advanced Methods of Machining (Hardcover, 1988 ed.)
J.A. McGeough
R4,652 Discovery Miles 46 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume provides production and mechanical engineers with a wide-ranging account of the techniques of machining that have been developed to deal with new materials. These include polymers, hard metals and ceramics, which are difficult to treat by conventional methods either because of the hardness of components or the high accuracies of machining required. Each chapter includes a discussion of the basic working principles, the removal rates and surface characteristics attainable, and typical industrial applications and machines that are available. Electron, ion beam, electrochemical and laser machining are described in detail. The erosive effects of sparks giving rise to accurately controlled metal removal or electrodischarge machining in which a liquid dielectric such as light oil is the working fluid is next described. Machining by use of plasma arcs, the medium here being an ionised gas, is then discussed. Two non-conventional mechanical methods of machining, involving ultrasonics and water jets, are also explained. Chapter ten of the book describes a range of mainly chemical methods of machining, many of which are the basis for the nano-machining technology needed for the latest generations of computers.
